Update: I'll retire this thread now, and start a clean one: Some micro-steps to improve tags (mid 2017)

Here's a list of steps to improve tag quality; I'm planning on doing these in increments so as to not flood the home page, and I'm posting it here to keep track. I don't think any of these would be controversial, but let me know if you disagree.

It's an attempt to get rid of some broken windows, making the site look professional and maintained:

Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it's unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.

Thus far:

These are gone now: (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread) (meta thread)

These have been added:

These have been updated:

To do:

Meta tags: . See Jeff Atwood, The Death of Meta Tags, StackOverflow Blog, 2010 and the meta.SE question here.

See meta threads: Can we kill off the tags "clarification", "meaning", "islam-for-beginners", and "advice-request"? and Burninate request for the "islam-for-beginners" tag

Tags to add: (search) (search: stoning, rajm) (search: lying, lie) (search: why do muslims)

Tags to rename:

To think about:

Tag triangle:

It seems I'm not the first to do this:

  • Do we really need a tag for "islamic scholar" I mean usually when we say scholar we mean a Muslim scholar? If so than scholar could be used as a tag for non-Muslim scholars!

  • Indeed "scholar" would be fine in the context of this site. It doesn't strike me as particularly important one way or the other though, and there were more "islamic-scholar" tags used. Commented Feb 10, 2017 at 12:46
  • I see more islamic-scholar means more corrections! And now reading my suggestion of keeping scholar for non-Muslims, that would create confusion :S If islamic-scholar is more used we'd better stick on it even if it is somewhat too long!

  • How about caliph and khilafah? Seems like one should be a synonym of the other. Commented Mar 31, 2017 at 16:06
  • @Mr.Bultitude: Looks right, but my knowledge of those terms is too limited, so it'd be better for someone else to sort that out. Would it be possible to make a separate meta thread? Commented Mar 31, 2017 at 17:03

Certainly. I'll try to do so sometime in the next couple days. Thanks for all your efforts at improving this community by the way. I'm extremely impressed. Commented Mar 31, 2017 at 17:12
